Swim spas: swim at home all year round

Somewhere between a pool and a spa, a swim spa lets you swim against a current in a compact, heated pool. How it works, installation, budget: what you need to know.

At a glance

  • Counter-current swimming in a compact pool, heated all year round.
  • A spa zone is often built in for relaxation.
  • Heavy equipment: the base, delivery access and electrics need to be studied upfront.
  • A budget well above that of a wood-fired hot tub.

How does a swim spa work?

Turbines or powerful jets create a current that you swim against without moving forward. The pool is filtered and electrically heated, and may include spa seats with massage jets. It is technical equipment, closer to a spa than to a wood-fired hot tub.

Installation

  • Base: a slab designed for several tonnes of water, specified by a professional.
  • Delivery: a swim spa often arrives in one piece, sometimes by crane; access to the site is decisive.
  • Electrics: a dedicated, compliant supply installed by a qualified electrician (in England and Wales, typically notifiable work under Part P).
  • Planning: depending on size and how it is installed, permission may be required: check with your local planning authority.

Budget

A swim spa sits in a different price category from a wood-fired hot tub: expect several tens of thousands of euros depending on length, swim power and equipment, plus the base, delivery and electrics. For UK buyers, delivery from the EU may also involve import VAT and duties. Ask for a complete price, installation included.

Looking for relaxation rather than swimming? A wooden hot tub with jets offers part of the spa experience for a much lighter budget and installation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a swim spa and a swimming pool?

A swim spa is shorter than a pool: you swim on the spot, against a current created by jets or turbines. It is generally heated all year round and sits above ground or partly sunken, on a base designed for its weight.

Does a swim spa use a lot of energy?

Energy use depends on the volume of water, the insulation, the cover and the set temperature. A good insulated cover and serious tub insulation make the biggest difference. Ask the manufacturer for an estimate suited to your climate.
