- Choose according to your regular users, not the maximum number of guests.
- Every extra seat means more water to heat, more firewood and a higher price.
- An internal stove takes up room: for the same size, an external stove leaves more space.
The size chart
Typical orders of magnitude: always check the model’s specification sheet, as dimensions and volumes vary between manufacturers and shapes (round, oval, square).
| Seats | Typical diameter | Water volume | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 to 3 | ≈ 150–170 cm | ≈ 900–1,300 L | Couples, small gardens, frequent use |
| 4 to 5 | ≈ 180–200 cm | ≈ 1,300–1,800 L | Families, the most popular choice |
| 6 to 7 | ≈ 200–220 cm | ≈ 1,800–2,500 L | Large families, friends |
| 8+ | ≈ 220 cm+ | ≈ 2,500 L+ | Holiday cottages, lets, groups |
2-person hot tub
The most economical format to buy and to run: it heats faster and burns less wood. Ideal for a couple who use it often, or for a small patio. Watch out for models with an internal stove, which leave little room to stretch out.
4-person hot tub
The best compromise for most households: big enough for a family or two couples, without blowing up the heating time. It is also the format with the widest choice and the most competitive prices.
6-person hot tub
For regular entertaining. The volume of water rises sharply: go for a powerful stove, good insulation and a lid, and perhaps filtration so you do not have to drain it after every use.
8-person hot tub and larger
For large groups, holiday cottages and lets. Plan for a very solid base, good delivery access and, ideally, a hybrid or electric model with filtration.
Round, oval or square?
- Round: the most common, sociable, everyone faces each other.
- Oval: more legroom, practical for two.
- Square or rectangular: fits better along a deck or a wall.
Beyond 8 seats, or if you want to be able to swim, the format changes: compare with a swim spa.
Frequently asked questions
What size hot tub for 2 people?
A model of around 150–170 cm in diameter is generally enough for two adults. If you sometimes have friends over, a 4-seat model remains reasonable in cost and heating time.
How much water does a wood-fired hot tub hold?
Depending on size, from around 1,000 litres for a small model to more than 3,000 litres for a large one. Check the specification sheet: the volume determines the heating time and the total weight.
How much does a filled hot tub weigh?
Water weighs about 1 kg per litre, so a filled 1,500-litre tub weighs more than 1.5 tonnes, plus the weight of the tub and the bathers. The base must be designed accordingly.
