At a glance
- Wood-fired hot tub: deep tub, usually heated with wood, no bubbles as standard, very little technology.
- Jacuzzi (spa): electric, jets and bubbles, continuous filtration, more technology and more electricity.
- Jetted wooden hot tub: the compromise, pricier and more technical than a classic tub.
The differences point by point
| Wood-fired hot tub | Jacuzzi / spa | |
|---|---|---|
| Heating | Wood-burning stove (or electric, hybrid) | Electric |
| Atmosphere | Silence, fire, timber | Bubbles, massage |
| Electricity | None for a wood-fired model | Required |
| Water | Changed often without filtration | Filtered continuously |
| Technology | Very simple | Pump, electronics, more technical upkeep |
| Looks | Natural timber, blends into the garden | More “appliance” |
Should you choose a wooden hot tub with jets?
For
- Massaging effect and muscle relaxation
- Often paired with filtration
- More appealing for a holiday let
Against
- Significant extra purchase cost
- Electrical connection required
- More technical parts to maintain
- You lose some of the calm that makes a wood-fired hot tub so special
Our view: if warmth and calm are what you are after, a well-insulated classic wood-fired hot tub is enough. If massage matters to you, compare a jetted wooden hot tub with a spa of similar size, including the electrical installation.
Prices
Wooden hot tubs with jets usually sit in the high-end tier, roughly €5,000–8,000, sometimes more. UK buyers should add delivery and any import VAT or duties. Understand the prices.
Want to swim as well? Neither a wood-fired hot tub nor a jacuzzi will do that: look at a swim spa, a compact pool with a counter-current.
Frequently asked questions
Can a wood-fired hot tub have jets?
Yes. Many manufacturers offer hydromassage jets as an option, powered by an electric pump. You then need a compatible tub (fibreglass or acrylic) and an electrical connection.
Is a wood-fired hot tub cheaper than a jacuzzi?
To buy, a wood-fired hot tub without jets is often comparable to or cheaper than a spa of similar size. To run, it uses no electricity if heated with wood. With jets and electric heating, the gap narrows.
